Standard Bank Youth Card Competition

A personal project, completed in partial fulfillment of my three-year degree. This was a competition event by Standard Bank’s Youth Development Programme and Inscape Education Group.

2016

About

Standard Bank and Inscape Education Group Pretoria teamed up to challenge third-year Graphic Design students to design the new look of their Youth Cards in 2016 and write a research paper to back their designs.

They chose a few fashion ethnic subcultures in South Africa and had each student draw a name of a subculture from a hat. From there the research development and design process began.

The approach

Drawing the “Smarteez” ethnic subculture card from the hat, I was not too familiar with the youth fashion-style and did an in-depth research paper with a Reference list on the fashion industry, people incorporating the style into their everyday wear, the movement behind the style as well as the characteristics of the style.

This led me to the conclusion that the “Smarteez” subculture group incorporates a mix-and-match of bright colours and patterns into their wardrobe, while still being stylish in a fashionable way. Therefore the design of the cards was set on a darker background, to emphasise the bright colours and patterns used.

Software used

  • Adobe Illustrator

  • Adobe Photoshop

Competition

The competition ended with a select few candidates from each campus being invited to attend a gala-ceremony with Standard Bank’s Business Development Executives to choose one designer’s cards to be mass-produced.

Neline made it to the top 2 options chosen by the bank’s executives. The winner of the competition was chosen by an online spin-of-the-wheel application by entering the two finalist names.
